Entering the parking lot of The Electric Factory I received a note from David of DCB, encouraging concert goers to get involved in their goal of bringing God's grace to local homeless shelters in their cities, by donating socks and towels. A portion of the note read, "Surely We Can Change To participate in the story of God is to be God's redemptive act in creation. We must endeavor to discern what it means and looks like to love our neighbors and manage this good earth that we have be entrusted. We must live decisively."

This has been the message and mission of the Remedy Tour and CD project, to receive God's healing grace and then be fruitful and multiply it to others.
David shared a story during the concert of how a man wept at the sight of a pile of socks and towels arriving at one shelter, which brought a humbling reality to those in the audience. I had the opportunity to chat with him as they traveled to Philadelphia, PA sharing their message of grace.

How's the Remedy tour going so far with Phil Wickham and The Myriad?

It's been fantastic. Those guys are both just wonderful to have out with us. The Myriad is they kind of kick the evening off. It's some of the best music I've heard in a long time. And Phil's a super guy he does a great job leading everybody in the middle slot. It's fun. It's been great all around. And we are really enjoying just being able to hang out as well which is always nice.

It's really awesome to open up your world to fans through videos and blogging online.

Yeah, it's fun to give everybody a peek at what's going on out here and to see the inside look at some of the stuff which some of it we're still trying to figure out how to use. It's been fun watching people respond to it.

Aside from showing fans what goes on behind the scenes 24/7, what was the group's hope in opening up this tech diary?

More than anything to let people see we are regular folks. I think the platform creates a strange distance or disparity between the people that are on the platform and those who are not. One that I don't think really exists. We all serve a different services and support. I think it's good to get a little peek at who we are when we are not on the platform. We are normal folks and life happens. Maybe we can se each other more clearly that seems like a good idea to me.

Even while traveling back and forth you try to make it back every Sunday to church in Waco TX?

I help facilitate the Sunday morning music program, which is kind of how our whole thing started. I began writing songs for the group of people, just trying to help them articulate faith through music, and everything has grown out. It's really important, more so essentially for us because that where most of us come from and they are the people we know and have lived life with. What we present outside of the church is really a reflection of what God is doing in that community, which is really cool.

This really allows you to connect and identify with your listening audience. How do you hope your music impacts the fans?

Just as its being used currently, allowing people to experience the reality of God's presence. I think a lot of times what happens is sometimes we forget that every second we live is in the every presence of God, so every moment is sacred. We just want to provide a space for people to re engage with that reality Music is a fantastic tool to do that. That is our hope that whenever people are with us and experience this songs is that their gaze is back to seeing that it is in the very presence of God that they are living life in. That changes the way you approach life.

O for a thousand tongues to sing is a song that you guys revamped on the Remedy Album. Although they are sometimes overlooked, they still hold so much depth. Does this hymn have a special meaning or sentiment to you and the band?


We all grew up in church. On each record we have tried to reach back and grab something, a historic moment whether it be a hymn or an old spiritual. There is history in the church. We are standing on the soldiers of a lot of people that have gone before us. To bring people into that stream of where we have been as a people of faith is an important thing. New songs are fantastic but the reason the hymn is around, as you said is because they have so much depth to them. They are such good songs, and to reclaim them is really important. Especially for our younger audience base, the folks that are attaching to what we are doing. I feel it's important not to neglect where we have been and to learn and pull from where we have been as a people of faith. One way to do that is through music. [In] Hymns, there is so much depth, and when presented theologically is just astounding at times.

Where else outside of traditional hymns do you draw inspiration from musically?

Inspiration is such a bizarre thing you never know when it's going to hit or all of the sudden take you down a path I think that the main thing as a song writer is to just pay attention as life unfolds. I that's what we hope, as artists to do, paint a picture or give a glimpse of what it means to be human, and experience life. As someone trying to particular[ly with] faith, its how do we paint a picture of what it means to be human in relation to God? I think it just takes paying attention, and those moments of inspiration are pretty unavoidable if you open your eyes to them.

What can listeners who may not be familiar with DCB expect to hear as they pick up a copy of Remedy?

What we set out to do is compose some songs that get in your mouth and heart really readily, so that hopefully your first listen you feel like its been a couple of listens. That's our intent. What we are trying to say with this is one; the frame of this record, is to reorient the listener with the reality of rescue that points back to the story of God. As the record unfolds towards the end we are hopefully pointing people outwards, this rescue is for the sick, for those who are hurting, those in need, you can't help but what to extort that. That's what we are trying to do in this collection of ten songs. Which we are really excited about, seeing people respond is really encouraging.


The title track of the album speaks of the availability of healing through worship. Sometimes problems can distance us so much that it's hard to find that freedom. What might you say to readers who as mentioned in the song, are "broken and bruised, mistreated and abused", What can they do As situations weigh them down?

I feel like God is most present in our relationships the people that we are around and among. I feel like that's when God shows up in a really tangible way. One thing is to pursue relationships with people who are trying to be intentional in being like Christ. That's when you can be surprised; God will show up at moments when you least expect. I feel like when you're in a community of people that are intentionally trying to follow Christ when you reach these moments of desperation he is really active and present through the people that you're around and among and that's what has been for me time and time again, true. It's thorough the community and people that we live with and the folks that God is most active and present through.

Lastly, are there any surprises for some faithful fans on this album?

There is a song we had on an independent record a long time ago that not a whole lot of people are aware of that we redid that's been really fun for listeners for awhile to discover again. That's the Rain Down song.
