Acclaimed GRAMMY winning Christian band Jars of Clay recently performed to a live audience of more than a million at the Live 8 concert in Philadelphia. The concert was held on Saturday, July 2.
The band united with high-profile musicians and celebrities to raise awareness of the extreme poverty in Africa, encouraging leaders of the world's wealthiest nations to eliminate Third World debt and increase aid to Africa. The representative figures on stage included Bon Jovi, Dave Matthews Band, Destiny's Child, Linkin Park, Maroon 5, Sarah McLachlan, Rob Thomas, Stevie Wonder, Toby Keith, Alicia Keys, Black Eyed Peas, Def Leppard, Richard Gere, Jennifer Connelly and Will Smith.
Lead singer Dan Haseltine of Jars of Clay recalls, "Performing during the Live 8 concert in Philly was incredible. There is a great deal of purpose in just doing our best to communicate, through performance, during a regular concert... at Live 8 it felt even more important. We were joining with such a diverse group of artists and activists who may not agree on much else. But that day, we stood in agreement that poverty should not be something overlooked, and we should all do what we can to eliminate it from this planet. I hope it doesn't take another 20 years to be reminded that we should all care about justice and generosity."
