“I was 15 when I got my first record deal. A deer friend of mine, Brown Bannister, had made a tape of me singing some songs I had written about faith. That tape got played over the phone for some record executives at Word Records in Waco, Texas, and they decided they wanted to sign me to a new label they were launching. When Brown called my house late one night to tell me I had been offered a record deal, I thought it was a practical joke. While Brown was trying to convince me that this was not a joke, my dad got on the phone and said ‘young lady, it is after hours.’ So in the same phone call I got a record deal and was grounded.”
